Dominance of the Internet

May 26, 2014

In an era which is predominantly being lead by constantly evolving technology, I think it's important that we know all of the numbers and statistics to show just how much technology is being relied on in this day and age. Firstly, I'd like to start this post off by showing you a short video (3mins18secs) in which many important facts and figures on social media's worldwide domination are defined:

If you watched the video, I'm sure you are quite shocked about some of the facts told, as am I. One of the main facts I found astonishing was that more people in the world own a mobile device than people who own a toothbrush: one of the necessities to keeping healthy, and this just goes to show what a warped world we live in. I also found it extremely surprising to find out that the population count of Facebook is higher than that of the United States - isn't that amazing? One of the things I was less surprised about is the fact that 3 in 5 homosexual couples meet online because I understand that homosexuals are the minorities in modern culture and the chance of a gay person finding another gay person near to their physical position is very unlikely. Although many more of the things said in this video shocked/surprised me, these are just a few of the things, and I'd love for you to leave a comment below this post and tell me what surprised you most and why!

Watching this video also got me thinking about the typical computer subject which everyone has heard of - internet safety! I've never normally been that bothered by people finding out things about me online because I have always been very careful what I put online and who I'm sharing information with. I like to think that I have a good idea of how social media works and what the do's and don'ts are online. Some things I share online are quite private things that other people may be reluctant to share sometimes, however I make sure that I share things that I feel are necessary of helpful to anyone trying to find out about me online, but I'm always sure to make sure I don't share too much information! I also make sure that I have custom lists/circles set up on social networks so I can share things I'm posting with the appropriate audience for what is being said. Before I end this post, I'd like to share another short video with you, this time it is one which was made by myself and a few friends for our ICT class at school. The video is presented in a very casual fashion with very little seriousness within, however it is presented in this way in order to inform about a serious issue online. I hope you enjoy! :)
